Palio
"Palio" literally means prize but usually refers to the horse race, which takes place in the Piazza del Campo in Siena, Italy, in July and August. For hundreds of years, the seventeen "contrade" or districts compete by making three turns around the piazza following days of pageants and celebrations.
Each piece is hand-made and hand-painted in Italy. The designs illustrate images derived from decorations found in old paintings, bas-reliefs and from the black and white floor of the Duomo or troubadours who lead their contrade in pageant.
